Case Study Seriously Good Venison In the beautiful Perthshire country, the delicious and free-range Seriously Good Venison can be found.

Venison is very low-fat content, as well as containing twice as much iron as beef and lamb. It is also very rich in vitamin B6 and B12, as well as omega 3, and so the health benefits have made this a very popular meat alternative to beef and lamb.

Seriously Good Venison run a free-range, grass-based system, in which the deer are outside enjoying the long grass that grows form April to September. During the winter months they are not fed on any high-energy cereals to fatten them up, instead a little wheat and winter feed is given, especially to the calves to ensure they get enough natural nutrients to grow. The young deer spend their winter months tucked up in an airy barn, where they can still run around and play, but remain protected from the harsh Scottish winters.

Wanting to keep everything as natural as possible, there are no pesticides or chemicals sprayed on the grass, instead they used the nice and natural manure from the wintering sheds to get nutrients back into the soil. The abundance of bees, hoverflies and wildflowers attests to the natural approach, and has created a lovely little ecosystem for nature to thrive.

With and onsite abattoir, it means that they can ensure the deer are not unnecessarily stressed by being moved to abattoirs outside the area and reduce their CO2 emissions. The team at Seriously Good Venison are very conscious about their carbon footprint and try to ensure all their packaging is environmentally friendly. Although they use plastic for their vacuum packaging, they make up for it by using recycled cardboard packaging for all their orders, and the ice packs in the boxes can be re-used for summer picnics.
