Case Study SkyeSkyns SkyeSkyns was established in 1983 by Clive and Lydia Hartwell, who were encouraged to diversify their small-holding. Realising the local abattoir was disposing of raw skins as waste, the couple saw a gap in the market and utilised this into a wonderful and highly successful business.

SkyeSkyns is now the sole remaining commercial woolskin tannery in Scotland and produces some of the most beautiful and handcrafted sheep skins, leather and woollen goods. Now run by the second generation of the Hartwell family, who are bringing SkyeSkyns into the 21st century, encouraging more tourism into the area, through their visitors attractions.

Welcoming visitors from all over the world, this stand-out Scottish business has been a must stop on the Isle of Skye. Offering free tours, learn from the skilled artisans themselves how this tannery still uses traditional methods to produce around 40 high quality lambskins each week, before stopping off in the lovely shop to browse their products.

Further diversifying the business, last year the team at SkyeSkyns introduced a delightful pop-up café in a cosy Yurt with its own woodburing stove. Yurtea and Coffee is seasonal pop-up, and runs from April until October, offering up breath-taking Watnernish views, and delicious Highland home-cooking. Surrounded by sheepskin rugs, it is the perfect place to curl and relax with a warm cup of tea or freshly roasted artisan coffee .Everything is made with love and care, from Scottish-produced hand-made traditional lemonades, to delicious baked treats.

SkyeSkyns are proud to showcase Scottish provenance on their menu, with cakes, traycakes and oatcakes all produced by local bakers, the scones and chutney all made locally in Waternish and specialty cheeses are sourced in the islands of Orkney, Giha and Arran.
